Top 10 Trending Keywords in .COM and .NET Registrations for December
Verisign has released their Top 10 Trending .COM and .NET English Keywords for December 2018. These are the most popular domain registration keywords used during the month, and can help give us an inside view of the hottest trends, news, styles, events, and even people, as it applies to registered .COM and .NET domain names.
In last month’s keyword list, the Versign blog featured a mix of very different keywords, from business to generic to GEO, including TOKEN, TRAIL, COLLEGE, JAMAICA, and DIVORCE. There were also several other keywords on the .COM and .NET lists, such as UNIVERSITY, LITIGATION, REPAIR, FRIDAY, and BUILDING, but we found no cross-pollination between the two keyword sets, and not even the pot-powered MARIJUANA appeared on both.
In December, the .COM registrations start off on a CBD binge, with HEMP in the top spot, followed naturally by the inevitable DIVORCE. The dental industry is well represented by DENTISTS and SMILES, while the upper crust gets theirs with SECURITIES and CAVIAR. We close off the .COM keyword list with some generic words like PILOT, CLASSIFIEDS, and STABLE.
The .NET section of the keyword chart also begins with the ganja-charged HEMP, giving us a near-unprecedented duplication of first-place keywords. Following that, there are a lot of generic terms like STRONG, FRIENDS, NEAR, SEND, and STEP, along with a pair of GEO keywords in EUROPE and CALIFORNIA. This gives the .NET list a very different look and feel compared to the .COM section.
For the first time in a few months, the .COM and .NET keyword lists features cross-pollination between the two, this time due to the first-place finish of HEMP in both instances. This was likely due to the US Farm Bill passed in December, which removed Industrial Hemp (and thereby hemp-derived CBD) as a federally controlled substance.
